Laser cutting of plastics

A BRM laser machine is ideal for cutting and engraving engineering plastics. Thanks to the precision and speed offered by a BRM laser cutter, you can process various plastics far more effectively than with traditional milling machines. This gives you full control over the quality of the end product. Furthermore, with a BRM laser machine, you have the option of both laser cutting and laser engraving plastics. Virtually every type of engineering plastic can be processed with a BRM laser machine, with a precision that other machines cannot match.

The advantages of laser cutting of plastics

The traditional milling machine is a tried and tested method for cutting and machining engineering plastics. However, this method has already been superseded by BRM’s laser machines. Firstly, a BRM laser machine operates 20% to 50% faster than a milling machine. That equates to a virtually 150% improvement in your production capacity. Furthermore, the laser offers cutting and engraving accuracy down to 0.1 mm. This allows you to easily machine even the most complex shapes and products. You also no longer need to take the thickness of the milling head into account. Finally, a BRM laser machine offers significant advantages for the finishing of your products. Whereas with a milling machine you had to deburr or flame-polish the sharp edges to finish them, a laser cutter delivers a clean end product. After all, the heat of the laser beam slightly melts the edges, which has the same effect as flame polishing. Furthermore, a BRM laser machine requires far less maintenance because the laser head makes no physical contact during the laser cutting of plastic. In short, a BRM laser machine is an investment that pays off in both the short and long term.

The possibilities of plastic laser cutting

Nowadays, various sectors are already using a BRM laser machine. Thanks to the precision and quality our machines deliver, they are very popular in the high-tech manufacturing industry. Examples include sectors such as electrical engineering, the yachting industry, the automotive industry, or even the food industry. Plastic laser cutting is used, among other things, for the production of the following products:

  • plastic components
  • enclosures
  • car parts
  • printed circuit boards
  • buttons
  • sensors
  • films
  • And much more

Which BRM plastic laser cutter is best suited to your needs?

Our machines are extremely versatile when it comes to laser cutting plastic. When selecting a suitable BRM laser cutter for plastic, it is important to identify which specifications are important to you. This allows us to recommend a model that perfectly matches your needs and objectives. In doing so, we take the following points into account.

Points to consider when purchasing a BRM laser machine

However, there are a number of factors you should bear in mind. Firstly, it is important to know which category of plastics your material belongs to. This could be:

  • Thermoplastics (amorphous, semi-crystalline or fully crystalline)
  • Thermosets
  • Elastomers

Thermosets will not bend under high temperatures and are less prone to deformation. Elastomers and thermoplastics, however, do bend more readily at higher temperatures. That is why it is important to check what type of material you are working with before you start laser cutting or laser engraving plastic.

With a BRM laser machine, you can easily process the vast majority of plastics. However, there are a handful of plastics that are not suitable. Unfortunately, PVC, PVB and carbon cannot be laser-cut or laser-engraved. That is why it is important to check whether your materials contain these plastics before you start working with one of our machines.
