Laser cutting cardboard with BRM

Are you active in the packaging industry, education or the creative sector? Then you know that laser cutting cardboard can make a huge difference in terms of speed, accuracy and end result. Certainly compared to traditional techniques such as sawing, cutting or die-cutting. Techniques that are often time-consuming and can result in ragged edges. Whether you’re designing bespoke packaging, developing prototypes or creating personalised designs, a BRM laser machine offers the ultimate solution for laser cutting cardboard.

Processing cardboard with a laser is not only fast and efficient, it also delivers immediate results without the need for post-processing. Discover the benefits, applications and which BRM laser for cardboard laser cutting is right for you here.

Why choose laser cutting for cardboard?

Cardboard is a lightweight, durable material with a wide range of applications. It is widely used for packaging, displays, models and creative designs.

Unlike cutting with blades or die-cutting, laser cutting of cardboard is a contactless process. The laser beam vaporises the material locally, without physical pressure or wear on tools. As a result, even the finest details are preserved and repeat work is accurate to within a tenth of a millimetre.

How does laser cutting of cardboard work?

Laser cutting cardboard may sound complicated, but it’s actually very simple! The machine uses a powerful beam of light that heats the surface of the cardboard. This causes the laser to cut through the cardboard – without the need for a blade or drill.

The technology behind the machine

The BRM laser cutting machine contains a glass tube filled with gas. When an electric current passes through it, a laser beam is created. This beam is directed towards the cardboard via lenses and mirrors. Where the beam hits the cardboard, it heats up and cuts through it.

Fully automatic cutting

Everything happens automatically. You create a design on your computer, load it into the machine, and it does the rest. How easy do you want it to be?! This allows you to work quickly and accurately, even with other materials such as leather, glass and acrylic.

What settings are important when laser cutting cardboard?

Cardboard is cut using a laser with a power output of between 80 and 120 watts. The most important settings are:

Speed and power

A balance is needed between speed and power. With cardboard, too much power is undesirable, as this causes the material to burn more quickly. A higher cutting speed, on the other hand, helps to prevent charred edges.

Focus and focal length

The focus determines the sharpness of the laser beam. An optimal focal length results in a narrower cut line and higher cutting quality. This makes it possible to achieve even fine details in a single pass.

Settings per machine

Every laser machine is unique. Settings found online must always be adjusted to your specific machine power. After all, 90% power on an 80W machine is not comparable to 90% on a 120W machine.
